Comfortable

Comfortable/cosy room. Clean and well maintained. Upon entering the hotel, a long mural depicting Silk Road travellers greets you. What a journey.

Barely a 3-star hotel at most.

A decent hotel as far as the room is concerned, 10 minutes from Bibi-Khanym, but it is certainly not even close to a 4-star hotel. The rooms are a good size but there is only one chair and the decor is over-the-top (flowers, glitter, silver, pearls...) and in very poor taste; the hallways are not air-conditioned and since they leave the windows open all day, they are at the same 43 degrees as the street. The breakfast is okay, nothing more, although the options for breads and pastries are very scarce and the worst part is that they serve it on the rooftop, without air conditioning, with the windows open under a metal roof overheated to 40 degrees: ideal for making guests uncomfortable and for the food to spoil (and that must be the reason why they only start breakfast at 8 a.m. and finish at 10 a.m.) and some of the food is dry or in bad condition. The pool is in the central courtyard of the building and there is almost no room around it, but the water is clear, mind you, you will find people swimming in (old) underwear or in shorts with a belt, without anyone saying anything to them. But without a doubt, the worst part of the hotel is its reception; they haven't answered any of the emails I sent to confirm (and there were 3), there is a red-headed lady who seems Russian who, for not giving anything, doesn't even say good morning, we asked the other dark-haired receptionist to organize a private car for us to go to Bukhara and when we arrived she hadn't done anything, and the prize goes to the guy who is there at night (who sleeps on a sofa in the reception), a completely indolent guy, who when you ask him for a 'lunch box' because you can't wait for breakfast to open, leaves you without breakfast because he puts the opposite of what you ordered inside and isn't even capable of printing or emailing the registration forms because his eyelids are literally drooping from sleep in front of the computer. And he doesn't care about anything! Mr. Akbar Akhmadjonovich, director of such a disaster, should display fewer titles at reception and take more care of the well-being of his clients (at breakfast, at the reception, at the pool...), which is much needed. A place definitely not to recommend and certainly not to return to! There are better options in the city!

Extremely BAD experience at this hotel!! Very disappointed as a Guest in the country and hotel.

Extremely Disappointing Experience at Medina Hotel, Samarkand
Our stay at Medina Hotel in Samarkand was one of the most disappointing hotel experiences we have ever had. As international tourists, we expected basic professionalism, courtesy, and hospitality. Unfortunately, we experienced the complete opposite.
From the moment we arrived, our first impression was negative. The receptionist, Mira, demonstrated a serious lack of professionalism, hospitality, and customer service. When we checked in with several pieces of luggage, she simply told us to carry everything upstairs ourselves. In most hotels, staff either assist guests with their luggage or at least offer help. Her dismissive attitude immediately made us feel unwelcome.
Another issue arose regarding payment. We were informed that the hotel required full payment at check-in. While hotels are entitled to have their own payment policies, this requirement was not clearly communicated to us before arrival or during the booking process. When my sister politely questioned the unexpected policy and asked for clarification, Mira became confrontational rather than offering a professional explanation.
The situation escalated to an unacceptable level when she called us “liars” and told my sister, “You don’t have money.” These comments were insulting, humiliating, and completely inappropriate for someone working in the hospitality industry. No paying guest should ever be spoken to in this manner.
Another disappointing incident occurred when we returned to the hotel after being out all day. Our room had not yet been cleaned, and the complimentary bottled water had not been replenished. We politely asked the front desk if we could have bottled water. Instead of showing basic courtesy, Mira responded by saying, “Pay sum, then water.” Considering we had already paid the full cost of our stay, we were shocked by this response. It demonstrated a complete lack of empathy and customer care.
What was even more concerning was how the conflict was handled. Rather than attempting to calmly de-escalate the situation or resolve our concerns professionally, Mira’s behaviour became increasingly confrontational. The situation deteriorated to the point where we felt we had no choice but to contact the Tourist Police for assistance.
Unfortunately, we did not find the Tourist Police particularly helpful in resolving the matter. Instead of bringing the situation to a calm conclusion, the hotel’s owner and several members of the owner’s family arrived, turning what should have been a straightforward customer service issue into an unnecessarily stressful public scene. This could have been resolved respectfully through professional communication, but instead it became an uncomfortable and intimidating experience for us as paying guests.
Hospitality is about making guests feel welcomed, respected, and valued. Unfortunately, our experience at Medina Hotel was characterized by hostility, poor communication, dismissive attitudes, and deeply disrespectful treatment.
To future travellers: Please be aware of our experience before choosing to stay here. We sincerely hope management takes these concerns seriously, provides proper customer service training, and addresses the conduct of staff members—particularly the receptionist, Mira.
No guest should ever be called a liar, insulted about their finances, made to feel unwelcome after paying for their stay, or be placed in a situation where they feel compelled to involve the Tourist Police over what should have been a simple customer service matter.
Sadly, based on our experience, we cannot recommend Medina Hotel to other travellers.

Horrible Experience - Not a Four Star Hotel

Our stay at Medina Hotel Samarkand was, unfortunately, one of the worst hotel experiences our family has ever had. We stayed in two rooms, and what should have been an enjoyable visit to Uzbekistan turned into an incredibly stressful experience because of the hotel's lack of customer service, professionalism, and hospitality. The hotel advertises itself as a 4-star property, but in my experience it does not meet that standard. The facilities, cleanliness, and overall service fell well below what I would expect from a 4-star hotel.
From the beginning, the staff came across as rude and unwelcoming. The rooms had a strong unpleasant odor, the hallways were dark, and overall the hotel did not feel well maintained.
The most concerning issue was that all five members of our group woke up each morning with large insect bites. Since this happened in both of our rooms, we strongly suspect there was a bed bug problem. This was extremely alarming and unacceptable.
Our interactions with the front desk only made matters worse. The woman we believe was named Mira was, in our experience, confrontational and raised her voice at us instead of trying to help resolve our concerns.
When we asked to speak with management, we were told the owner's son was the hotel manager. Rather than addressing our concerns or working toward a solution, he spent a significant amount of time showing us security camera footage to argue that our "Do Not Disturb" sign was the reason our room had not been cleaned. Instead of focusing on the larger issues we had raised, the situation became an unnecessary argument that wasted a great deal of our vacation time.
More than an hour later, what appeared to be the owner's entire family including the owner, arrived. Instead of helping calm the situation, it felt as though they were all confronting us at once. As guests simply trying to raise legitimate concerns, it was harrasement and completely unprofessional to have multiple family members involved in what should have been a straightforward customer service issue.
The experience escalated to the point where we felt we had no choice but to involve the tourist police to help mediate the situation.
Afterward, the owner's son and daughter came to our room carrying fruit as a goodwill gesture. We declined because, by that point, we felt the damage had already been done and the underlying issues had not been addressed.
What happened next was the most shocking part of our stay. When two of our family members (including a kid) returned to the hotel after dinner, the owner's son and daughter stopped them in the lobby and began yelling at them. We were told, verbatim:
"Your mom didn't take our fruit. We can do whatever we want. This is our hotel and we can make a scene."
Hearing management make a statement like that was deeply unprofessional and completely inappropriate.
This experience left us feeling disrespected, unheard, and genuinely disappointed. The horrific experience at Medina Hotel ended up overshadowing what should have been a memorable trip.
We hope this review encourages the owners to invest in better customer service training, professional management, and improved cleanliness. Future guests deserve to know what our family experienced so they can make an informed decision when choosing where to stay in Samarkand. As soon as we checked out, Medina Hotel canceled our booking on booking.com so we couldn't give them a review. We have since contacted Ministry of Tourism and Booking.com to file an official complaint.

Overbooking is pure.

The hotel may and does meet the flattering reviews of it, but the owners or managers are actively into overbooking, that is, they give away on reservations and receive money from agencies for more rooms than are available. We booked the hotel from April 25 to April 27 - that is, not holiday or weekend dates, yet upon arrival at the hotel at 18.00 - there were no rooms.... It was suggested that we move to another hotel, or wait probably a couple of days for rooms to be vacated... it turns out we were 18 such clients at the time in a day. I didn't want to spend hours at the reception and find out about the relationship with the hoteliers instead of the planned sightseeing. Moved to another hotel - 20 minutes from the center and not 4*, but 3*. Support was dumb... and then it turned out that first support was given information that we were checked in, then that a replacement was provided, but another hotel was informed. And later, the hoteliers refused to compensate in any way for both moral and material damage (by replacing the room with a room of smaller Category). We solved our issue of compensation through a tour operator - and these hams seemingly went unpunished. So if you want some adrenaline – Welcome to Medina Hotel 4*
