A Stunning Oceanfront Stay That Exceeded Expectations

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel. The property itself has a charming, tranquil atmosphere, and the room décor made it feel warm, elegant, and inviting. The view from our room was absolutely unmatched. waking up to the ocean every day was unforgettable.
The dining experience was excellent, with delicious food and breathtaking ocean views that made every meal special. There were also plenty of beautiful places to lounge and relax throughout the property, making it easy to unwind.
What truly made our stay exceptional, however, was the staff. Anna, Cesar, Tomas, and Leti all went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. A special thank you to Tomas, who greeted us warmly by name every time he saw us. It was such a thoughtful touch that made us feel genuinely valued as guests.
The service throughout our stay was consistently prompt, friendly, and attentive. We left feeling well taken care of and would absolutely stay here again.
One tip for future guests: the hotel is only about a 10-minute taxi ride from town, so getting there is easy. However, I highly recommend arranging transportation with an independent taxi driver rather than using the taxis offered through the hotel. We found the hotel’s transportation rates to be extremely expensive—far higher than we expected and even more than comparable rides in many U.S. cities. Hiring a local taxi driver in town to pick you up at the hotel can save you a significant amount of money.
Having also stayed at this hotel’s Mexico City location, I can honestly say this property exceeded my expectations. While the Mexico City hotel was nice, this resort felt much closer to a true five-star experience. The atmosphere, service, amenities, and overall attention to detail were on another level.
Overall, I highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway with stunning views, outstanding service, and wonderful hospitality.

Dear Lucy,
Thank you for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and detailed review of your stay at La Valise Tulum.
We are truly delighted to know that your experience exceeded your expectations and that you found the atmosphere, design, and oceanfront setting so memorable. Waking up to the Caribbean Sea each morning is one of the most special aspects of staying with us, and we are happy that these moments became a meaningful part of your visit.
It is especially rewarding to hear that you enjoyed the dining experience, the peaceful spaces throughout the property, and the warm, welcoming ambiance that we strive to create. Your kind recognition of Anna, César, Tomás, and Leti means a great deal to us. We will be delighted to share your comments with them, especially your thoughtful mention of Tomás and the personal attention he provided during your stay.
We also sincerely appreciate your feedback regarding transportation services. Guest comments are invaluable to us as we continuously evaluate every aspect of the experience we provide.
Knowing that, after visiting our Mexico City property, La Valise Tulum surpassed your expectations and delivered the level of hospitality, service, and attention to detail you were seeking is truly an honor for our entire team.
Thank you once again for your generous recommendation and for allowing us to be part of your travels. We look forward to welcoming you back for another unforgettable stay by the sea.
Warm regards,

On the positive side: large, comfortable room, with efficient A/C; big swimming pool; generally nice and helpful staff.
On the negative side:
- when you arrive for check-in, you are presented a 2 page-contract, with a lot of small print, to sign; you really long for other things to do upon check-in after a long trip.
- our first room was incredibly noisy (60 db of a constant humming noise); we contacted the front desk and the answer was "it is because your room is next to the machine room"; we were offered another room, which we accepted, and the second room was fine; still, in a 5* hotel, when you pay USD 600, you really don't expect that they'd dare propose such a noisy room (and then that you lose an hour to get assigned another room).
- the breakfast was generally fine, except for 2 things: croissants on the first morning were rancid; they really give the impression that they're trying to save as much as they could (fruit juices are watered down to the point they're almost tasteless) and you need to keep asking and asking to get things that you're actually supposed to get (and then you're not even sure you'll finally get them - we gave up on a couple of things).
- they advertise at the reception that they're a HiltonHonors member, but when you ask them to register your stay with HiltonHonors, they say it's not possible.
- generally, the hotel is less exclusive than advertised (the sargassum, which makes it impossible to even access the beach, if of course not helping).

The beach is appalling! What a horrible vision of Tulum.

A catastrophe to see the hotel beach invaded by sargassum.
We can't even see the color of the water anymore.
Nor the sand... a nightmare! An appalling smell and above all, we don't set foot in the water!!

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are truly sorry to learn that the seasonal presence of sargassum affected your experience and prevented you from enjoying the beach as you had hoped.
Sargassum is a natural phenomenon that impacts many destinations throughout the Caribbean at certain times of the year. While it is beyond our control, our team makes every effort to manage its presence on the beachfront and minimize its impact as much as possible for our guests.
We understand how disappointing this can be, especially when visiting Tulum for its beautiful coastline, and we sincerely appreciate your comments. We hope you had the opportunity to enjoy other aspects of your stay and that we may have the chance to welcome you back during another season to experience the Caribbean under different conditions.
Warm regards,
La Valise Tulum Team.

Very disappointing and does not reflect the price-performance ratio

Overall, a huge disappointment!!
Especially when I consider that I, as a solo traveler, paid USD 900 for one night. In addition, there were the expenses and the transfer from Cancun Airport to Tulum.
The following notes: The price paid is absolutely not in proportion to what I experienced and received.
Hotel: very beautiful architecture, nice style
Staff: Basically, everyone was very friendly and accommodating. In particular, I would like to mention Carlos on the beach, Natyeri at the reception, and the older masseuse who gave a powerful, sensational massage.
Room: My reserved room was very large for me alone and beautiful. The only thing was that everyday items, such as hygiene products like cotton pads, ear cleaners, bath slippers, etc., had to be specifically requested in order for them to be brought to the room. Also, my sun loungers on the balcony were not always covered by the cleaning service, and I had to request those as well.
My travel adapter for electronic devices did not work in the room. Natyeri at the reception kindly got me one.
After the third night. I had to change rooms after the second night. I always felt like someone was in the room starting from the second night. On the third night, I discovered a large badger in my room that had crawled through the straw roof. I could not spend another night there and wanted to switch.
Even though it was mentioned at check-in that the concierge is available 24/7, that was not the case. On the first morning, the reception was still not staffed at 7:30 AM. After the roof discovery in my room at night, I only received a response in the morning...
Breakfast: That was the first major disappointment for me.
On the first day, when I went for breakfast, there was nothing at all. I asked if I was too late. They denied that and told me that breakfast was à la carte. The staff explained the menu to me as follows. 'From the first category, you can choose anything, from the second, one item, and if you want more, you have to pay for it. That is unacceptable!' I pay so much for the room/breakfast and then there are even restrictions! No way. There was only American coffee, which is undrinkable. If I wanted to order an espresso, I had to pay extra for it. The menu said 'Homemade bread.' I asked what types of bread were available. The response was croissants and banana bread! I do not eat croissants, and banana bread is not real bread to me. An absolute no-go for a luxury boutique hotel in this price range.
Once, I ordered overnight oatmeal, which is oatmeal soaked overnight. I was simply served raw oats in milk. That went straight back!
In the last few days, I was told that I needed to pre-order breakfast. I do not know in advance what I will feel like the next day.
On the last day, I had breakfast in my room and ordered banana bread. In the banana bread, I found two small, black, hard, stone-like things and almost broke a tooth! :-((
Because of these experiences, I never made a reservation at their so-called acclaimed star restaurant. If such simple things do not work, then dinner will not work either!
Beach: The beach was actually very nice, if it weren't for all the seaweed. At some point, I complained because I smelled the slowly decaying seaweed with every breeze, and the beach was full of it. On the third day, finally a few workers came with wheelbarrows and pitchforks and removed part of it. Of course, it was never enough, because such a hotel should clean it mechanically every morning. So I had to walk over a pile of algae that had washed up on the shore in order to get into the sea.
Bar: At the bar, there was a young, small, rather chubby employee with glasses who had absolutely no idea about drinks.
I ordered a gin and tonic at the bar. She wanted to serve it in a small white wine glass and top it off with mineral water. So she had no idea at all. I had to explain to her how to properly prepare a simple gin and tonic and which glasses to use for it. It would definitely be beneficial for her to take a bartending course.
One morning at breakfast, I observed her a bit. She was just cutting the fruits for the drinks. No gloves on, still wearing all her jewelry on her fingers, and in between, she kept enjoying and then continued working. I almost lost my breakfast!!!
When I ordered drinks at the beach, I couldn't order any nuts or chips to go with them; they simply didn't have any.
One day, I ordered guacamole with the drinks. Actually a typical Mexican specialty. What a misstep. The guacamole was simply a mashed avocado with a lot of lemon juice. No spices at all; the tortilla chips were completely unseasoned.
Italian restaurant in the partner hotel next door.
I ordered spaghetti with clams. The shells were almost all empty, and there was so much flat-leaf parsley in it that it overshadowed the entire natural flavor.
With the bread, finally some normal bread, there was olive oil, but it was accompanied by vinegar. No Italian would do such a thing.
I summoned the restaurant manager and explained to him how simple it is to cook Italian food. I also explained to him how to properly prepare spaghetti with mussels. Unfortunately, they have no idea about Italian cuisine.
A customer who runs a travel agency thought she was not hearing correctly when I told her all of this!
For me, as a frequent traveler, it was a huge disappointment, and I will not return to either Mexico or this hotel.

Dear Claudia,
Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback regarding your stay with us.
While we are pleased to read your kind words about our architecture, your spacious room, and several members of our team including Carlos, Natyeri, and your therapist we are genuinely sorry to learn that your overall experience did not meet your expectations.
Throughout your stay, our team remained in close contact with you on multiple occasions each day to better understand your concerns and provide solutions whenever possible. When you reported the wildlife incident in your room, we immediately arranged a complimentary upgrade to one of our Cenote Master Suites for the remainder of your stay, ensuring a different room category with a solid roof structure and a more comfortable environment. We were pleased to know at the time that you were happy with this alternative.
We also addressed each request shared with us regarding amenities, room preferences, beverages, and dining experiences. As a boutique property, some amenities are provided upon request, and our team made every effort to promptly deliver the additional items you requested during your stay.
Regarding breakfast, our concept differs from a traditional buffet and is based on an à la carte experience. We understand that this style may not suit every traveler’s preferences, and we appreciate your comments as they help us continue refining how we communicate our dining concept to guests.
As for the beach conditions, seasonal sargassum is a natural phenomenon that affects much of the Caribbean coastline. Our teams work continuously to remove it and maintain the beach in the best possible condition, although the volume arriving from the sea can vary significantly from day to day.
We are especially disappointed to know that, despite the many conversations and follow-ups throughout your stay, we were ultimately unable to create the experience you were hoping for. Nevertheless, we sincerely appreciate the time you spent sharing your observations, as they provide valuable insight for our team.
We wish you all the best in your future travels and thank you for having chosen to stay with us.
Warm regards,
La Valise Tulum team.
