One of the best hotel experience in Tulum

We stayed for two nights at Casa Gitano and it was honestly one of the most beautiful hotel experiences we’ve had in Tulum. The atmosphere of the hotel is incredible — peaceful, stylish, and perfectly designed to blend with the natural beauty of the area.
The rooms were spacious, clean, and beautifully decorated with a unique bohemian aesthetic. Every corner of the hotel feels thoughtfully designed and perfect for relaxing. Waking up surrounded by the ocean view and just steps away from the beach was unforgettable.
The staff were extremely friendly, welcoming, and attentive throughout our stay. Service was excellent, and the entire experience felt very special from the moment we arrived.
The location is also perfect, close to great restaurants and beach clubs while still feeling calm and private. If you are looking for a stylish and relaxing stay in Tulum, we highly recommend Casa Gitano. We would absolutely stay here again. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Boho Relax Anniversary Trip

My husband and I went for our anniversary and had a wonderful time! Our room was on the beach so you could hear the waves and was so relaxing. We spend a couple of days lounging. Aldona and all the staff are wonderful. Rest and relaxation is just what we needed. The first day we got there we went to the restaurant at the hotel and had a cauliflower dish that was amazing and some tacos , all the food we had there was delicious. The view from the restaurant is so beautiful. Just know if you go on full moon they have a party I usually bring headphones but forget mine so it was hard to sleep that night. They work hard to clean up the sargassum seaweed every morning so we never went into the water. Because we wanted a relaxing time I did not always care for the loud music in the restaurant. The room didn’t have a television which was ok with me but my husband wanted to watch the NBA Finals so we went and watched them down the road at a sports bar which was fun. They have yoga and other classes which I would have loved to attend but just didn’t make it to one. They also have spa services which we will have to try next time.

Amazing hotel, however the immediate area was less than desirable…

Myself, my partner and 9 yo daughter came here for one week, out of a 2 week stay in Tulum. As an anxious traveller, I was a bit sceptical as the holiday loomed, due to reading the odd review featuring comments mentioning a dirty beach, dodgy showers and cleanliness. They couldn’t have been more wrong in our opinion and I think we have decent standards, although perhaps not compared to some of the holiday makers South Tulum is trying to and succeeding to attract!
Prior to the stay, I received some messages from Victoria on reception, who upon meeting was really lovely. She said that during December the beach was beautiful, with very little seaweed. Coming from the West Coast of Scotland, we certainly would not have judged a beach based on its seaweed, but I was concerned about cleanliness with my daughter running around and grateful for her messages in advance. What we did find, was that the staff cleaned the beach daily, of any weed or rubbish that had washed in, and the beach was in fact one of the most beautiful spots in the area.
The room was beautiful, minimalistic and clean, with lovely beds and bedding and towels, with separate towels provided for the beach. The shower was amazing, with full size bottles of toiletries and very hot water. We had a jug of drinking water, two complimentary nespresso pods provided every day, and access to the mini fridge for keeping our own items in (we didn’t dare use any of the extras provided by the hotel…more on that later!). The hotel staff were all lovely, keeping the rooms, grounds and beach to a high standard. It was really quiet within the hotel grounds at all times during our stay, aside from the music you could hear from the beach club at certain times when on the beach, which was fine.
South Tulum, is rather pretentious, with a vibe that is ridiculously high end. The contrast to that of central Tulum couldn’t be that different. Casa Gitano has an onsite beach club/restaurant known as Gitano Beach, and we ate here on the night of our arrival and first morning, for ease. For the standard, small meals we ordered, and one drink each….our total for these two meals came to about £180! The price for a bottle of water was £9, which is why we daren’t touch the mini bar! We never returned here for any food or drink, as simply could not justify it after visiting the local authentic restaurants in Tulum central. This was a real shame, as we came away with a decent budget to allow for a splurge on good food and drink, but the extreme prices in this area meant that we simply couldn’t justify it. The local ice cream shops in South Tulum charged about £8 for a scoop of ice cream. The shops and restaurants were definitely appealing for the instagrammers and influencers…of which we are not.
The drive back and forth along South Tulum ‘strip’ was pretty draining toward the end of our week, but absolutely worth it to enjoy true Mexican food and experiences in central Tulum town. For anyone with husbands, (or wives!) who love to fish, the location was brilliant for driving to Boca Paila where the fishing is highly rated. We were thankfully far enough away from the main hubbub of activity to really enjoy a tranquil holiday in our apartment and the beach at Casa Gitano. We overcame the cost issues by stocking our own drinks in the apartment and had always planned to drive about to eat authentically anyway-it was just a shame there wasn’t the option for us to bear the cost of eating at the hotel or more locally, now and then.
At the price we paid, it worked out about £100 a night and the hotel was absolutely worth it. Knowing it was at least 2-3times this price for the following week at the point of booking, just goes to show you the sort of money required and happily spent to stay in this area by others. I must stress, that Casa Gitano did not have any pretentious air about it, and certainly did not make us feel out of place staying there.
I wouldn’t hesitate to come back Casa Gitano, but unfortunately you couldn’t pay me to return anywhere along the South Tulum ‘Riviera’.
This review is to be as honest as possible, should anyone like us decide to book Gitano, in the hope that if we’d had previous expectations of the area, we may not have felt the anticlimax we did, in realising how expensive and flashy an area it was.
Just to be clear-we are in no way ‘tight’ or hard up! There just has to be a level of sensibility, and justification. Yes we were on a fabulous holiday, but when cost prices are SO extreme and inflated in a certain area, just due to the people it has attracted over time, there has to be a limit. If the instagrammers and influencers can justify £8 per scoop of ice cream, good on them. But me and my daughter were able to follow up a delicious meal at a local restaurant in Central Tulum, with delicious fruit ice creams in a little store in the town for about £2 and happily returned regularly to try other flavours!
