hotel cabo verde

Just got back from Cabo Verde, Africa and from Portugal with my family . In Cape verde we stayed at a 3 stars hotel but very decent and clean named Hotel Avenida, is a 3 star but the bathrooms look updated so ws nice and also very good deal . We paid 45 euros per night and stayed 5 days.

Decent enough

The hotel is centrally in Mindelo city centre. It's decent enough, clean and room was spacious, equipped with fridge and TV. Breakfast was basic but fine and staff was friendly and polite. Everything was on walking distance. There's a super market exactly opposite the hotel and a bank where you can exchange money

Good location; lots of stairs

Excellent communication prior to arrival, with the hotel kindly agreeing to let us have breakfast on arrival. We found the breakfast to be rather poor on the first day, TBH, but that opinion changed when we discovered they’d do us a cachupa. It makes for a great start to the day!
Our room was on the 2nd floor facing away from the sea. Note that most (if not all) rooms are 2+ flights up, with no lift. The room was nice and sunny and it also had lightweight curtains and metal shutters to both the window and the balcony door, so there was a lot of flexibility. There was a lot of hanging space but little shelving. The fridge worked fine but it shared a socket with the TV! There was no kettle or safe in the room.
One incident that was really worrying was when we asked for our key on returning to the hotel and the receptionist had to rush upstairs as she’d given it to another guest. Did our key let them into their room??? Still, we were only there for one night and had left our valuables in reception for safe-keeping, so we let it pass.

a great start in Cabo Verde

We were really happy with the start of our 20-days Cape Verde tour. The apartment on the 4th and top floor with a view over the gorgeous harbour Porto Grande was pleasant and had all we needed. We had booked a 'Suite with Sea View' and this is what we got. We returned to this hotel after our trip to Santo Antao island.
All the staff here is friendly and helpful, also with carrying up our luggage the four floors. It was no problem also to keep the room a bit longer than usual and we could leave a piece of luggage here, when away for a few days.They don't change money as mentioned in their brochure, but there is a bank just next door. The hotel's location on Avenida 5 de Julho is ideal and very central to everything. All of interest in Mindelo is in walking distance from here.
In the sitting room of the suite - besides a couch, a table and chairs - there is a flat-screen TV (which we didn't use), a small empty fridge and in a corner a kitchen. In the bedroom there are reading lamps on both sides of the bed and the bathroom with a good shower has small bars of soaps and shampoo sachets (rare in Cape Verde's hotels).
Breakfast is excellent as well - especially in comparison what we got elsewhere. Cheese, Ham, Butter, Yoghurt, Jam, Fresh Fruit, Camoca powder, Cake, Hard -boiled Eggs, Bread. And one could aks for free for Catchoupa or any kind of eggs and omelette.
When I went to pay on the last evening I was served at reception by friendly Cristilena Pimenta, who speaks good English and who happened to have been elected Miss Cape Verde 2016 during our stay.

Thank you veru much for taking the time to write such a detailed experience.
The way you described our top floor suite facing the bay, the harbour.
We do try to offer an excellent brakfast choice and a local dish like cachupa.
We do accept bills or payment in Euros, but not coins. Change of bills can be made at the bank next door or by paying for your products or services and receiving the cjange in escudos.
We are glad you had a very good overall experience. We are certain that a 20 days tour in cabo verde gives a pretty accurate picture of the islands.

Basic but ok

I stayed here for 5 nights either side of a visit to Santo Antao. The location is central and a few minutes walk to the ferry terminal. All central shops, bars and restaurants are seconds to minutes away. The rooms are basic and clean. Rooms overseeing the street are noisy. Breakfast is OK but basic. Prices are competetive and low-mid range. You pay for what you get and I think some of the more negative reviews of this hotel were somewhat harsh. I would come again and more me it's price and location.
