Pleasant stay in the heart of Sofia

My boyfriend and I stayed for 2 nights at Elysia Hostel during our trip to Bulgaria.
We picked the place despite some of the comments and we never felt sorry for that.
The hostel is conveniently located close to the main train and bus station and walking distance from everything we wanted to see. The hosts are very pleasant people who helped us with anything we needed.
Also I would say eventhogh the rooms are not super lux (it's not a 5 star resort you paid for... right?) it was extremely clean and there is everything you need to relax after a long day outside.
I would absolutely recommended Elysia for budget stay in Sofia.

Clean, small room, but poorly managed

The room is very small, yet clean. The ensuite has a shower directly above the toilet. There were no other guests here. Despite that, the little advice I requested, the owner Emilia was encumbered to the point of freaking out. Even before asking simple directions she said "I have yoga practice". All i needed was simple directtions of how to get to the city center and it turned into an uncomfortable ineffective big spectacle. When I came back in the evening to let her know I was checking out the next morning early, she refused to receive me and just yelled from her behind the door of her room, "I'm eating", she didn't even come out of the room. The room is cold. It's not closets the city center.
This is clearly a family run pension, not a hostel or hotel. If you need a bed and clean bathroom for a night it'll suffice, but don't expect a modicum of any hospitality from the owners.

Does the job

Elysia hostel is barebones, but it does the basics well.
The room we stayed in was immaculately clean, as was the en suite bathroom. The beds were comfortable, it was very quiet and the couple who owned it were very kind, made us free coffee etc. There is a pharmacy and mini-supermarket about a minute away as well, so you don't go hungry too easily!
The location is a short walk from town, with a few bars in the neighborhood, it is not the most ideal part of the city but the go-to places are with walking distance (10-15 minutes). If you're legs can't carry you so far there is a metro stop one block away (3 minute walk).
If you are looking for a hostel to provide some fun and meet people this is probably not for you, if you are looking for a comfortable stay and good sleep for some energy to enjoy the day, then book!

Friendly place

Friendly, cosy and quiet.
Basic, clean facilities.
I found it conveniently located. Train station, bus terminal and city all reachable on foot.
When I arrived from the airport late in the evening, I found it a little bit hard to find at first. The house is set back from the street, kind of in the back/side yard of another house, behind a fence. A friendly local person in the street helped me find it.

Very basic

We booked three nights and stayed only one. We didn't like either the hostel or the neighbourhood (scruffy and quite a trek to the area with the main attractions.) The room was overpriced for what was offered - no fan or air-con, an over-bed light with exposed wiring, no glasses/toothmugs; there was even a charge for a bath towel. We also felt it was misdescribed online in that it said 'access to garden'. OK, if walking through the garden to the front door is 'access' we had it but there was only one table which was used by the family.
